Dissolved carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis on the highest level

Based on the “cube” platform that has set the gold standard for elemental analysis, the iso TOC cube is a new concept for the quantitative and isotopic determination of dissolved carbon and nitrogen in liquids and slurries.

The simultaneous determination of dissolved δ13C and δ15N at concentrations as low as 0.2 ppm and 10 ppm, respectively, are easily achieved with the vario iso TOC cube. For the first time the high sensitivity for measuring TOC or TNb in aqueous solutions is combined with the accuracy and reliability of organic elemental analysis to automatically measure up to 100% carbon concentrations in matrices ranging from dilute glacial meltwaters to aggressive soil extracts. Oxidation of bound carbon and nitrogen by means of high temperature digestion and catalytic post combustion in a free selectable range of up to 1,200 °C, with reduction of nitrogen oxides to N2 for determination by IRMS.

With measuring modes for the isotopic analysis of TC/TIC, DOC, TC/TIC/TNb or DOC/TNb. Formed CO2 and N2 are purified through a halogen trap with subsequent 3-step intensive gas drying system, and a newly developed matrix separation system (patent pending) that allows multiple injections of difficult matrices (such as seawater). CO2 is detected by a super wide range NDIR-photometer with extraordinary linearity prior to peak focusing of both CO2 and N2 on individual temperature programmed desorption columns (patent pending) to achieve the high-level performance required for IRMS measurement.


Specifications

High temperature combustion unit
Quantitative sample digestion up to 1,200 °C  - with a ten years furnace warranty. This is the prerequisite for 100% recovery also for samples difficult to combust. Jet injection of oxygen directly to the sample leads to highest oxygen concentrations at the point of combustion and low gas consumption

Large detection range
From <1 ppm to 60,000 ppm dissolved carbon, 10 to 60,000 ppm for dissolved nitrogen. Volume injections between 0.05 and 3 mL for optimal detection.

Real matrix separation
The new reactor concept enables real matrix separation and offers maximum protection of the combustion tube. Excellent properties for analyses of saline solutions (e.g. brine) or other complicated sample matrices.

Temperature programmed Desorption (TPD)
Separation of gaseous components (both CO2 and N2) with individual TPD columns for perfect separation without peak overlap. Automated optimization of the analysis time.

Instrument control
With a standard PC for perfect results also for unknown or heavily variable sample matrices with integrated sample feeder for up to 32 samples. Possibility for remote service due to full digitalization of the instrument electronics

Clean, safe, fast
The analysis only takes a few minutes, no aggressive or toxic chemicals are used, helium carrier gas

Easy installation requirements
48 x 55 cm benchtop space, 1 power supply (230, 110, 100 V), running water source and two gases are sufficient for maintenance free long time operation
